Terps Fall to #20 Florida State

April 7, 2013

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Senior Vroni Van Berlo defeated No. 31 Daniele Borthwick, but the Maryland women's tennis team fell to No. 20 Florida State, 1-6, Saturday afternoon.

It was the Terrapins (5-12, 0-7 ACC) sixth straight loss, five of those coming against ranked opponents. On a windy afternoon, Van Berlo's win broke a three-match streak without a singles win.

"I think [the wind] affected them too much," said head coach Daria Panova. "I don't think they realized that their opponents are also playing against the wind and we were just not prepared to fight. I think in some of the matches we were trying to find excuses a little more."

Freshmen Olga Bredikhina and Nataliya Bredikhina lost, 8-2, to Borthwich and Kerrie Cartwright. Florida State sealed the win with Francesca Segarelli and Kristina Schleich's win over Van Berlo and freshman Sarah Gealer.

Van Berlo earned the Terps' lone point in her singles win. Freshman Gabriela Srodowski lost the first set, 3-6, but came back to win the second, 7-5. In the 10-point extra set, Srodowski fell, 6-10, to Schleich.

The Terps take the court in Winston-Salem, N.C., against Wake Forest on April 12 at noon.
