Release: 04/09/2013

Tutoring is meant to assist student athletes in their acquisition and understanding of course material. Tutors are not intended to teach course material. Tutors are there to clarify and elaborate on material covered in course readings and lectures. Student athletes should come prepared to tutorial sessions and have all necessary course materials, such as books, notes, and course packets. Student athletes are expected to be active participants in tutorial sessions. Free tutorial assistance is available to all student athletes. Visit the Forms & Applications page if you are interested in becoming a tutor or mentor. ASCDU Tutor/Mentor Applications are accepted throughout the year.

What to Consider Before Requesting a Tutor

  • What are the goals that I would like to accomplish from tutoring?
  • How much time will I need to spend with a tutor each week?
  • Will a session in this course be a productive use of both mine and the tutor's time?
  • Do I need regular help or am I more interested in exam review sessions?

How to Request a Tutor

  • Student-athletes interested in getting a tutor must contact their ASCDU counselor. The counselor will inform the Program Coordinator about the requested tutorial session.
  • Email notification of the tutor assignment will be sent to the student athlete and their ASCDU counselor.
  • In the event that no appropriate tutor is available, the ASCDU Program Coordinator will contact campus resources to identify potential tutors. In the meantime, the student athlete should seek assistance from the professor to identify alternative tutorial support, such as office hours or other campus tutoring. Student athletes should also consult with their ASCDU Counselor about additional campus resources.

Tutoring Sessions and Policies

  • Tutoring sessions are normally scheduled to occur at least one or two times per week for one or two hours.
  • Tutoring sessions are expected to begin and end on time.
  • Student-athletes must swipe their UMD ID into the computer at the start and at the end of each assigned session.
  • If a conflict arises and the student-athlete is unable to attend a tutoring session, immediate communication with the student-athlete's ASCDU Counselor or the Program Coordinator must occur.
  • Tutoring sessions may be suspended by the ASCDU team counselor, pending results of a meeting with the coach, student-athlete and team counselor, related to excessive missed sessions or related issues. All academic communication related to the tutorial function between tutor and student athlete must be done at the ASCDU office. Therefore, student-athletes and tutors MAY NOT exchange telephone numbers, email addresses, instant messenger screen names, or by "Facebook/MySpace" to discuss their academic tutorial
