Terps, Big Red Set For First Round Showdown

Faceoff between Maryland and Cornell is scheduled for 1 p.m. at Capital One Field at Byrd Stadium

On Malone: Senior tri-captain … first team All-American candidate as a senior … preseason first team All-American by College Lacrosse USA and Inside Lacrosse’s Face-Off Magazine … running on the first midfield … major offensive contributor … leading returning scorer … enters 2001 season with 20-game point-scoring streak … key factor on the extra-man unit … will play on the face-off wing … possesses strong leadership qualities … very confident player … great dodger and finisher … according to coach Edell “he will have to play like a first team All-American for Terps have similar success to last season and that’s what’s expected of him.”

As a junior (2000): Decorated campaign in which he was named a USILA third team All-American and College Lacrosse USA third team All-American … earned All-ACC accolades … won the William Cole Award as the Terps’ Most Outstanding Midfielder … led the team in goals with 28 and was second in total points with 39 … among the team’s most accurate shooters scoring on 37.8 percent of his 74 shots … notched three extra-man goals and one game-winner … led all offensive players in groundballs with 57 (third overall on the team) … tallied goals in 14 of 16 games, recording multiple goals 10 times … registered a point in every game, giving him 20 consecutive games with a point, dating to the final four games of the 1999 season … 12 multi-point games … was dynamite in the first half of games throughout the season, recording 27 of his 39 points (69.2 percent) in the first 30 minutes of the game (21 of his 28 goals also have before halftime) … began the season with back-to-back two-goal games against Mount St. Mary’s (2/27) and Duke (3/4) … had goal and an assist vs. Bucknell (3/7) … tallied two goals and two assists in win over Towson (3/11) … recorded only game-winning goal of the season in 8-7 win at Cornell (3/18) as he beat Big Red goalie Justin Cynar with 7:09 left in the fourth quarter from the left side of the cage … followed Cornell heroics by setting career-high with four goals – all in the first half – as Maryland upset No. 6 North Carolina (3/25) … scored all three of the game’s second-quarter goals … earned Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week honors (3/27) after great game at Chapel Hill … scored once against Virginia (3/31) and two vs. Navy (4/8) … set career-high for points with five as he tied his career-high in goals with four at Johns Hopkins (4/16) – all of which came in the first half … awarded second Maryland Student-Athlete of the Week (4/17) after career game at Hopkins … closed the season with two goals in each of the Terps’ last four games … had two against Yale (4/28) and at UMBC (5/6) … had four-point days (two goals and two assists) in each of the NCAA games against Hofstra (5/14) and Princeton (5/20) … has nine points (four goals and five assists) in five career NCAA Tournament games.

As a sophomore (1999): Played in all 14 games … fourth-leading goal scorer with 10 … fifth on team in points with 19 … posted six multi-point games and three two-goal games … began year with two goals, including game-winner against Denver (2/25) in season opener … netted two of Maryland’s seven goals in second-quarter outburst against Duke (3/7) … recorded second straight multi-point game against Penn State (3/17) … scored in third straight game vs. Cornell (3/20) … had top game of career against North Carolina (3/27), setting career high with four points on two goals and two assists … closed season with points in four straight games … had two assists in ACC semifinal against Virginia (4/23) … recorded goal and assist at Yale (5/1) … had one assist at Towson (5/5) … notched goal and helper in season finale vs. UMBC (5/8) … scooped up 28 groundballs during the season.
