COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland softball team led Iowa through three innings and Ohio State for five innings, but was edged out in both games Saturday in the Maryland Miken Invitational.
Freshman Lindsey Schmeiser's grand slam in the top of the seventh helped the Terrapins (5-14) come back from a five-run deficit against the Buckeyes (10-6) in the top of the seventh to tie the game at nine, but it wasn't enough to earn the victory.
Lindsey Schmeiser and sophomore Liana Newton started off the game's scoring in the top of the third inning. The two runs came after the Terps loaded the bases and two walks brought home the runs. They maintained the 2-0 lead until the Buckeyes scored two runs in the bottom of the fifth inning to tie the game at two.
Ohio State then took the lead in the bottom of the fifth inning, and expanded it to 9-4 in the sixth before the Terps came up in the top of the seventh. Maryland then scored five runs to tie the game at nine.
Nikki Maier, Melissa Mancuso and Corey Schwartz loaded the bases with one out when Schmeiser came to the plate. She promptly cleared the bases with a grand slam to cut the Buckeyes' lead to one. With Beards at the plate, Newton then scored on a Buckeye error to tie the game at nine.
In the bottom of the seventh inning, the Buckeyes sealed the victory, 10-9, when Leesa Gresham drove in the go-ahead run with an RBI single.
In the day's first game, Lindsey Schmeiser's hitting kept the Terps alive against the Hawkeyes (15-6), but the Terps couldn't complete the comeback.
Maryland maintained the 1-0 advantage thanks to three scoreless innings from starter Kaitlyn Schmeiser until the top of the fourth inning when the Hawkeyes scored two to give them the lead for good.
The Terps kept battling in the bottom of the sixth inning when a Lindsey Schmeiser triple sent Schwartz home and McCann singled Schmeiser home to cut the lead to 5-3.
The Hawkeyes maintained the lead until the end of the game to win, 9-4.
The Terps' final game in the Miken Invitational Tournament is tomorrow in College Park, Md. against Binghamton at 1 p.m. Admission is free for all games and parking is open all weekend in lot 4B.
