#10 Maryland 82, NC State 62

Head Coach Brenda Frese

Opening statement:
"It was a solid win. Obviously we're not pleased in terms of I think we showed areas that we have to improve on from our end. I liked the energy that we started both the first and second half with. I thought we were aggressive. I thought at times we chose to play the score versus playing the game in terms of getting better. It's something we have to continue to improve on, but I thought these three [Alyssa Thomas, Tierney Pfirman and Tianna Hawkins] were sensational. They were locked in. They really made a lot of plays for us at times when we had other players struggling within their game. That's what you have to be able to have, players that provide great leadership as our upperclassmen, and consistency. I thought they did a terrific job."

On not being able to hold on to a substantial lead early:
"Turnovers. Unforced turnovers by us. Foul trouble. Kind of a flow that was not pretty. Credit NC State. I thought they played hard for 40 minutes. They continued to compete and that's just for us and our youth are playing the scoreboard verse playing the game that we have to improve on."

On making shots:
"I think we're doing a really nice job sharing the ball. This team continues to show how unselfish they are. Sometimes we're too unselfish when we're making that extra pass and we do show that in terms of our characteristic as a team, we're very unselfish and make plays easy for one another."

Junior Forward Alyssa Thomas

On coming back after her second foul:
"I was kind of cold after just sitting there for a while. I was still able to go out there and bring some energy and lock in on the defensive end."

On the Terps' offense:
"Coach told us that they don't handle dribble penetration very well. We ran sets where we set screens and I could drive the lane and score."

Freshman Forward Tierney Pfirman

On her performance:
"Every game you try to play your best and have some fun out there. Numbers don't really matter that much, its all about getting the win. It was one of my best games, but there's more to come."

On defenses focusing on Alyssa Thomas:
"It makes it easier for me when they are focused on her. But also when I can score like this it will help her and Tianna get more open looks. If opposing teams have to focus on me and our outside shooting then we can play our game inside the paint."

Senior Forward Tianna Hawkins

On playing while Alyssa Thomas on the bench:
"With [Alyssa] being on the bench I have to step up even more to make up for everything we lose with her out of the game."

On her season-high 17 rebounds:
"It was a lot of work. Coach told us at half that we weren't going hard enough on the boards. I came out stronger in the second half on both ends of the floor."

NC State Head Coach Kellie Harper

On Alyssa Thomas and Tianna Hawkins:
"Those are two great players. Obviously they're very dynamic on the offensive end. I thought Thomas did a nice job defensively tonight, kind of setting the tone for them. When you've got Alyssa Thomas leading the break and Hawkins cleaning up everything in the paint, that's a pretty powerful combo. We just didn't have an answer for Hawkins in the paint. I'm obviously really disappointed in our transition defense, but [Thomas and Hawkins] executed and felt good for 40 minutes tonight. They really played well."

On starting 0-6 in the ACC:
"I think if we can just get through this stretch. These kids need something positive to happen. I think we're definitely a better team than what we played tonight. We've shown that we can be very competitive in our league. We just haven't been able to finish games out. It's tough right now, when you get in a stretch like this. It's just a snowball effect and you've got to be able to stop that momentum and change it, and it's really hard for us right now. I've got several kids in the locker room that I know will be ready to go at practice tomorrow, and they'll be ready to fight. My biggest challenge is to get all 12 of them there."

On takeaways from the game:
"I thought our bench came in hard and gave us some life, so to speak. I thought we tried to play a lot of kids and rotate around, try to find some combinations that would work for us. I thought we got some good play from some kids that needed the minutes and needed the experience. It will be a great opportunity for film because we got a lot of kids in there. I'm proud of them for not quitting. We just have to keep fighting."
