COLLEGE PARK, MD -- Maryland senior Keith Beach moved into second place on the all-time Maryland career assist chart after totaling three assists and freshman forward Taylor Twellman scored a career-high two goals in the Terrapins 6-1 win against the UMBC Retrievers on Wednesday evening at Ludwig Field. The six Terp goals set a new Ludwig Field record, which was previously five goals, scored against Robert Morris on Oct. 20, 1996.
Freshman Beckett Hollenbach put the Terps on the board early in the first half, scoring off a Jason Cropley shot, which rebounded right to the feet of Hollenbach. UMBC would score its lone goal of the evening at the 21-minute mark when Ryan Cuomo shot a header off a cross shot from Matt Gormley. Maryland sophomore Rob Birch closed out the first half scoring off a Keith Beach-assisted ball to the lower left side of the net.
Twellman scored twice in the second half, with his first goal coming at the 39 minute mark. He would also score the final goal of the game at the 85 minute mark off a Randy Merkel-Kirk Miller assisted ball. Other goal scorers for Maryland included Steve Armas (50:21) and Pierre Venditti (70:51).
In goal, Marylands Christian Lewis totaled two saves while allowing the one goal. UMBCs Mike Griffith recorded eight saves in 90 minutes.
Maryland improves to 2-1 overall while UMBC fell to 2-2.
The Terps travel to Virginia on Saturday with a 7 p.m. matchup with fourth-ranked Virginia. It is the ACC opener for both schools.
