Berger Hits NCAA Mark at Virginia Tech

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Dominic Berger posted the fastest time of the meet in the men's 60-meter hurdles and hit a NCAA provisional-qualifying mark in the process to lead University of Maryland performances Friday at the Virginia Tech Invitational indoor track and field meet at the Rector Field House.

Berger went 7.85 seconds to win his semifinal heat in the 60 hurdles, going 0.04 seconds faster than Mike Loyd of Wake Forest, who won the other semifinal. Berger also qualified for the IC4A championships with his effort. He had the fastest qualifying time in the prelims at 7.89 seconds.

Also for the Terrapin men, freshman Devin Regan won his heat in the 500 meters and finished eighth overall at 1:05.73, while the Maryland distance medley relay was second in 10:17.39, just missing an IC4A qualifying mark.

On the women's side, Maryland's distance medley relay team earned a berth in the ECAC Championships, as Danielle Siebert, Candace Holmes, Libby Babcock and Laurel Jefferson won the event in 12:06.65.

Kierra Foster posted an ECAC-qualifying mark of 8.76 in the prelims of the 60-meter hurdles, placing seventh. Maryland freshman Chanel Williams joined Foster in the semis of that event and qualified for Saturday's final with an eighth-place finish of 8.84 seconds. Foster was just behind her teammate in the semis, missing the last spot in the final by 0.008 seconds.

Zakiya Shivers and Jillian Anwah also got ECAC marks by placing seventh and ninth in the 20-pound weight throw. Shivers went 57-0.75, with Anwah just behind at 56-4. Toni Aluko tied for third in the women's high jump at 5-6.50, while Zhanna Barer tied for seventh in the pole vault at 11-5.75.

Katie Purcell won her heat in the 1,000 meters at 3:00.98, with Meghan Braffet placing seventh at 3:02.64.
