Terps Homecoming Is A Sweet One

Feb. 15, 2003

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terps rolled into the Comcast Center after wrestling six straight road matches, and proceeded to drop the Old Dominion Monarchs by a score of 27-9.

The Terps 19 point win was highlighted by a pair of falls. Freshman John-Henry Zarzycki scored a technical fall over Charlie Busch 21-6 in the third bout of the day to give the Terps an 8-3 lead. In the next match, sophomore Adam James earned his third pin of the season, with just over 1:00 left in the second period over the Monarch's Jon Stovich in the 149-pound division.

Matt Pandullo led off the match with a thrilling 11-4 victory over Old Dominion's John Starkes. With just over one minute remaining in the match, Pandullo led 6-4, but after a near pin fall, he earned two points for the takedown, and three for the near pin to give the Terps a 3-0 lead.

The Monarch's were able to tie up the score in the second bout of the day when redshirt freshman Chris Buckner scored a 4-3 decision over Mike Lupa. With less than ten seconds remaining in the second period, Lupa scored a takedown to tie the match at three, but Buckner escaped from Lupa's grasps at the beginning of the third period to score the bout winning point.

Jason Kiessling followed up Zarzycki's and James' pins with a 6-3 decision over Dennis Whitby. Kiessling was able to keep Whitby's offense at bay throughout the match. Kiessling earned his six points on three takedowns, while Whitby was only able to score his points by escaping Kiessling's takedowns. This gave the Terps a 17-3 lead.

In his second dual meet of the season, John Antonelli wrestled up from his familiar position at 157 pounds, and took on Dave Kaplan. Wrestling at 165-pounds, Antonelli put up a good fight, but a takedown by Kaplan in the middle of third period was too much for Antonelli to overcome, and he fell 7-5, making the score 17-6 in favor of the Terps.

In the 174-pound bout, Patrick Cissne upset the Monarch's best wrestler. Ben Summerlin, the team leader in pins, was 10-2 on the season in dual meets, but was outgunned by Cissne. After a 19 point first period in which Cissne took a 10-9 lead, Summerlin countered and took a 13-12 lead heading into the third period, but could not hold on, as Cissne went on to win 19-14 to give the Terps a 20-6 lead.

On paper, Adam Wright may have been senior Jake Stork's most formidable competition, but on the mat it was a different story. Stork took Wright to the ground right as the match began and racked an early 4-0 lead. After nearly being pinned a few times during the first period, Wright came back and was able to ride Stork for most of the second period to keep the scoring low. An escape and a takedown gave Stork his seven points for the match as he easily handled Wright 7-2 to extend his winning streak to 25 matches.

Sal Aquia continued his rampage of late with yet another win. Aquia's fifth win in a row has him sitting atop the ACC in the 197-pound weight class. He was able to score a 13-5 major decision over Old Dominion's Greg Gill to score the last of the Terps points.

In the final match of the day, Derrell Lorthridge was able to score a takedown and an escape in the second period to defeat Eric Fehnel 6-3 and end the match with the score 27-9.

The win will give the Terps a boost of confidence going into the last match of the season against Virginia. This win pushed the Terps over the .500 mark on the season (7-6), and is a good stepping stone to the post season.

Maryland will be in action next Wednesday, Feb. 19 as they will take on Virginia in coach John McHugh's final match of his 25-year coaching career at Maryland. The match will take place at 7:30 p.m. in the Comcast Auxiliary Gym.
