Maryland Finishes Strong At The Penn State Open

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Freshman John-Henry Zarzycki made it to the quarterfinals, and won three matches in wrestle backs, and six total to record a fifth place finish in just his second collegiate tournament.

Following suit, Senior Jake Stork added four more falls to his team high total en route to a fifth place finish in State College, Pennsylvania where the Terps wrestled in their second tournament of the season, the Penn State Open.

Another wrestler of note is freshman Jason Kiessling who in the 157-pound weight class defeated Cumberland's Andy Critchfield 3-0, and recorded two wins in wrestle backs including a fall in 3:45 against Justin Lannello (unattached).

In the 125-pound weight class Matt Pandullo defeated Chris Yetzer 7-4 before losing to the ultimate winner, University of Pennsylvania's Matt Velenti, and freshman Zach Wendal won his first two matches of the season, both in wrestle backs.

Jason Gribschaw, Mike Lupa and Ed Reybitz all competed in the 133-pound weight class, but failed to record a victory.

Along with Zarzcki, Stephen Lanciotti and Jonathan Gunther also wrestled in the 141-pound weight class. Lanciotti defeated Brian Wackman (unattached) in the first round of the tournament by a score of 15-0 to record his only victory.

Adam James was the sole wrestler in the 149-pound division where he felled James Strause (unattached) in 5:47 and recorded another win in wrestle backs, making his total for the season six wins.

Four Terps wrestled in the 157-pound division with Matt Kenny and the aforementioned Jason Kiessling leading the way. Kenny defeated James Madison's Jeff Jacobs 7-3 and also recorded a win in wrestel backs. Jason Ellis and John Antonelli both competed but could not record a victory.

Sean Fehn and Brian Mullaney totaled four wins between them in the 165-pound weight class. Mullaney finished with three of the four wins, the most noteworthy, a 7-1 beating of Cumberlands Jason Gault.

In the 174-pound weight class, Lance Kearns, Dan Scheets and Patrick Cissne all represented Maryland. Cissne was the only wrestler to record a win, with his coming over Ron Howard (unattached) 8-3 in the first round of the tournament.

Sal Aquia, a second place finisher at the East Stroudsburg Open, defeated The Apprentice School's Larry France in 3:29 to record his first fall of the season, and Senior Jake Reid recorded his first win of the season as well.

In the heavyweight division, Scott Cannon and Eric Fehnel both competed. Fehnel failed to record a win, and Cannon defeated The Apprentice School's BJ Pruitt in 1:14 in wrestle backs for his only victory of the tournament.

The Terps will be in action next the day before New Year's Eve, December 29th, in a two day tournament in Wiles-Barre, Pennsylvania.
