GREENSBORO, N.C. - Sophomore Hudson Taylor was named the ACC Wrestler of the Week for the fourth time this season after pinning Kevin O'Connor of Virginia Tech in the first period on January 19 in a 33-8 Maryland win. Taylor improved his winning streak to 15 matches and has not lost since November 17.
This is the fourth time that he has earned the award while no other wrestler in the conference has earned it more than once. Taylor also earned Wrestler of the Week honors on November 27, January 2, and January 15. Maryland has won the award six times and North Carolina is the only other school with multiple honorees with two. Sophomore Mike Letts was honored with the first award on November 6 while junior Josh Haines earned it on November 20.
Taylor, who is ranked No. 7 in the country at 197 pounds, pinned O'Connor just 2:32 into the match on Saturday afternoon. Taylor is now 21-2 on the season with a team-high 14 pins. Entering the week, his 13 falls were tied for sixth in the nation, including every weight class at every division. In Division I, he was tied for the third most pins, just three behind the national leader. He had 15 pins all of last season in which he went 29-9 and advanced to the round of 12 of the NCAA Championship.
Taylor has dominated his opposition in the ACC the last two seasons. With the match against O'Connor, it was his fourth time facing a wrestler from the ACC this year and the fourth time he has won by pin. In the last two years, Taylor has gone 12-2 against other wrestlers in the conference with nine of those victories coming by fall.
No. 21 Maryland (10-3, 2-0 ACC) gets back into action on Saturday, January 26 when it hosts NC State and Duke at Comcast Pavilion beginning at 2:00 p.m.
