WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Newcomer Lexi Brand provided a spark for the Terrapins at the last weekend's William & Mary Invitational.

Brand lost her first round matchup in Flight C to Virginia Tech's Shannon Betts to move to the consolation bracket. From there, however, Brand rolled off three straight victories on her way to winning the consolation bracket. Her wins included a 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 hard-fought victory over Harvard's Agnes Sibilski, a 6-4, 6-3 win over top-seeded Neela Vaez from Virginia, and finally a 6-4, 6-1 win over Penn State's Sarah Lotto.

Six other Terps competed in the tournament including Maggie MacKeever, Julia Huschke, Lisa Miller, Jordan Hansbrough, Burce Kurkan, and Oksana Krutiyenko.

Both Miller and Kurkan were seeded in their brackets. Miller was seeded first in Flight D but after beating Richmond's Alex Smyth 6-4, 6-4 was beaten 6-2, 6-0 by Virginia Commonwealth's Josefin Hijertquist.

Kurkan, the fourth-seed in Flight E, won her first two matches easily (6-0, 6-0 and 6-0, 6-1) before withdrawing from her third round match against the eventual Flight E champ Kara Kucin from Marshall.

The Terps will be back in action this weekend as they serve as host of the Maryland Invitational. Action is set for Friday, Saturday, Sunday at the Tennis Center in College Park.
