NC State Downs Maryland Wrestlers, 24-13

RALEIGH, N.C. - The Maryland wrestling team (3-2, 0-1 ACC) dropped their first ACC meet of the season, losing to NC State (5-4, 1-1 ACC), 24-13, Saturday afternoon at Reynolds Coliseum. After starting the dual season 3-0, the Terps have lost their last two meets. NC State broke into the win column for their first time in five matches, earning their first conference victory of the year. Saturday's win gives NC State a three-match winning streak over Maryland.

The Wolfpack jumped out to a big early lead, wining five of the first six matches. At 165, senior Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) lost his first dual match of the season, coming up short against Pierre Pryor, 8-2. Dustin Kawa helped the Wolfpack earn an 8-0 lead with a 19-3 technical fall over redshirt sophomore Mark Reid (Medford, N.J.) at 174.

The Terrapins' first points of the match were earned by Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) as he earned his 23rd victory of the season with an 11-1 major decision victory over Jon Godwin at 184. The Wolfpack responded, taking the next three matches to jump out to an 18-4 lead. Jason Gore beat sophomore Bob Vorhies (Morris Knolls, N.J.), 10-3, at 197 and in the heavyweight match, redshirt sophomore Jeremy Duncan (Platte City, Mo.) lost on a tiebraker. NC State grappler George Cintron earned a 19-5 major decision victory over redshirt sophomore Matt Pandullo (Severn, Md.) at 125.

Maryland rallied late, with two big victories in the 133 and 141-pound weight classes. Redshirt senior Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) earned his sixth pin of the season, dropping NC State's Clarence Davis in 4:26. At 141, senior Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) earned his team-high 26th win of the season, beating Jonathan Williams, 11-5.

The Wolfpack outlasted the Terps, taking the final two matches to earn the victory. Freshman Adam James (Silver Spring, Md.) came up short against James Giamoni, losing, 15-9, at 149 pounds. In the final match of the day, Kevin Gabrielson of NC State downed freshman John Antonelli (Norristown, Pa.), 8-1, at 157 pounds.

Maryland will try and return to the win column as they battle non-conference opponent George Mason Wednesday night in Fairfax, Va.
