#8 Maryland Powers Past Delaware, 69-53

NEWARK, Del. - Tianna Hawkins and Alyssa Thomas combined for 29 points and 29 rebounds and No. 8 Maryland used a 17-4 run to close the game in front of a sellout crowd at Delaware, 69-53, Thursday.

Hawkins had 16 points and 16 rebounds, while All-American Alyssa Thomas had 13 of each. Katie Rutan scored 13 for the Terps (8-2), who won their fourth straight game.

Hawkins scored 12 straight points to help Maryland open a 43-31 lead over Delaware (5-3) with just over two minutes gone in the second half. With 13:17 left, the Terps led 50-37.

Delaware's All-American Delle Donne had eight points and Danielle Parker had four to help the Blue Hens pull to 52-49 with just over eight minutes to play. Coming out of the under-8 media timeout, Rutan and freshman Chloe Pavlech hit back to back threes to bring Maryland's lead back to 58-51 with 6:41 to go.

Delaware's last field goal was a jumper by Delle Donne at 7:00. They hit two of four free throws in the final two minutes.

Delle Donne played for just the second time this season after missing a month with Lyme Disease. She finished with 19 points and six rebounds but was 7 for 23 from the floor in 34 minutes.

Lauren Carra had 16 points for Delaware, which snapped a four-game winning streak.

The game was played before a sellout crowd of 5,089, the largest crowd in Delaware women's history.

Since its loss to No. 2 Connecticut, Maryland has won its last three games by an average of nearly 40 points. The Terrapins, the nation's top rebounding team, beat the Blue Hens on the board, 44-35. Thomas and Pavlech each added five assists and Pavlech added three steals as well.

Next, Maryland will welcome Brown, UMES and Hartford to College Park next Friday and Saturday for the Terrapin Classic. The Terps will take on Brown at noon next Friday, with UMES and Hartford playing at 2:30 p.m. Next Saturday, the Terrapins will take on either UMES or Hartford at 4:30 p.m., with Brown playing the other at 7 p.m. Buy one ticket to Friday's games, get one half off for Saturday's games here.
