CHAPEL HILL, N.C. - Fifth-seeded North Carolina scored the game's first four goals and went on to eliminate the Maryland Terrapins, 9-6, Sunday afternoon in the first round of the NCAA Women's Lacrosse Tournament. The Terps got four goals from senior Delia Cox, but it was not enough as Maryland ends the season with a record of 12-8.

In addition to Cox's four goals, Casey Magor and Kelly Kasper each chipped in a goal and two assists for the Terps. Cox finishes her brilliant Maryland career with 178 goals and 40 assists for 218 points. Her 178 goals rank fourth all-time at Maryland, behind only Jen Adams, Kelly Coppedge and Kelly Amonte.

Despite falling in the 4-0 hole, the Terps rallied to cut the deficit to just one going into the half. Kasper got Maryland on the board in the 22nd minute, and Cox scored unanswered goals making it 4-3 after 30 minutes. Despite an even number of shots taken by both teams, North Carolina goalie Kristen Hordy made six saves in the half to help maintain the Tar Heel advantage.

Maryland won the opening draw of the second half, but could not capitalize on the possession. UNC would go on to score back-to-back goals to stretch the lead to 6-3. The Terps would cut the Tar Heel lead to two goals three times in the second half, the last time coming when Cox made it 8-6 with her fourth goal of the day with 12:40 left in the game. Maryland had two offensive chances to get back to within one, but could not find the back of the net. After a Terp turnover in their offensive end, UNC got the ball downfield and Brooke Dieringer scored her third goal of the afternoon with just over six minutes left, helping to seal the Tar Heel victory.

Sophomore goalie Allie Buote finished the game with eight saves, including six in the second half. North Carolina was 3-6 on free-position shots, while the Terps were 0-2. The six goals scored by the Terps was the lowest this season.

North Carolina advances to face the winner of Northwestern and Stanford in the NCAA Quarterfinals.
