COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Three different players found the back of the net as No. 20 Penn State handed Maryland a 4-1 defeat Thursday night at Ludwig Field. The last time the Terps were beaten by three goals at home was in November of 2001 when Virginia defeated Maryland 3-0 at Ludwig Field.

Maryland (7-4-1) was playing without one of its top scorers in Abe Thompson, who missed the game with an ailing hamstring.

The Terps dug themselves into an early hole in the 15th minute after Penn State was awarded a throw-in deep in Maryland territory. PSU's Brian Devlin headed the ball toward the far post at the six, where a Terp player then headed the ball in the net for the own goal.

Penn State (6-2-5) took a 2-0 lead after Kenji Treschuk headed in a cross sent by Brian Devlin from 30 yards out. The 2-0 advantage would be short lived, though, as the Terps took the ensuing kickoff and notched their first score of the game just 20 seconds later. Kevin Reiman sent a through ball to Domenic Mediate who chipped the ball over Conrad Taylor who had come off his line to play the ball.

Penn State pushed the lead back to two goals when Richard Costanzo pushed the ball down the field and found a streaking Simon Omekanda down the left side. Omekanda held off the Terp defender and got a shot off from 18 yard that found the lower left portion of the net for the score at 63:05.

The Nittany Lions put the game away at 73:18 on a David Walters blast from 35-yards out that curved into the upper-ninety.

The game was marred by physical play as the Nittany Lions racked up 21 fouls and four cards, compared to just three whistles on the Terps and three yellow cards. Penn State was efficient in its offense, scoring on four of its seven shots in the game.

The Terps will look to rebound on Sunday, Oct. 17, when they take on Virginia Tech in the Hokies' first home ACC match. LiveStats will be available on, as well as live audio on
