COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Postgame quotes following No. 1 Maryland's 13-7 win over Stony Brook on Sunday.
Maryland Head Coach John Tillman
On how the game unfolded and Maryland's fast start:
"Obviously Charlie [Raffa] did such a good job at the X and the wing guys did a really good job, so when you get that many possessions you give yourself an opportunity to get in a flow offensively. You kind of get a sense of what they're going to do with a fast tempo, and when Charlie's doing things like that it definitely makes things easier. We didn't expect to get off to that fast of a start; we knew Stony Brook played really good team defense."
On what it says about the offense when nine different players score a goal:
"We try not to be too predictable in terms of how we play. We have a very unselfish group, a group that really buys into sharing the ball. Coach Moran does a really good job of putting those guys in the right spots, and hopefully they understand the looks. They are willing to make the extra pass and that's been a lot of fun with a group like that."
On if he was pleased with the team's energy level after not playing for eight days:
"The seniors really had them dialed in. It's funny being off that long, I felt like we were a little flat in practice yesterday, but talking to the guys I think they wanted the game to get here. Sometimes you forget that they're 18 to 22 year-olds, and they practice so hard they want to go out and play against somebody different. That's what they really enjoy doing, they love playing at Byrd [Stadium], so at times they almost start looking ahead. We had to just caution them to take care of what we can take care of, and control what we can control. Eventually, the whistle is going to blow and you're going to get what you want, but let's not waste any time getting ready, or we've done ourselves a disservice. Our leadership has really been good; the seniors had them ready."
Sophomore Faceoff Specialist Charlie Raffa
On his performance:
"It's one game at a time. I don't want to look at this game as so big, I just want to keep moving. I want to keep working hard and hopefully getting to where I want to be by the end of the year."
On becoming a better player:
"I feel more confident this year. I've known the guys for a while longer, so I feel like I have a connection with them. It's a team effort, so it's not all on me. I know I have those guys on the line to help me out."
On scoring more goals:
"That's not something really that's planned; it just happens. They tell me if I have it, I can go, just don't mess anything up."
On his play:
"I was just clamping the ball, trying to get it out to myself. Jesse [Bernhardt] and Landon [Carr] and [Brian] Cooper were doing a good job locking up the wing guys so I could get the ball myself."
Senior Attackman Kevin Cooper
On being No. 1:
"We've never been No. 1 since I've been here until this year, but going to back-to-back national championships, you know you have that target and that every team wants to knock you off. We know we're going to get everyone's best game, and we kind of like that. It just prepares us and we know we have a battle every week."
On the offense:
"We have a lot of depth. A lot of different guys can score. I'm pretty sure every game we have a different leading scorer. We have so many guys that can step up. Everyone's unselfish; no one really cares about getting their points. They know it's all going to come. It's an unselfish group, and that's when we're at our best."
Senior Long Pole Jesse Bernhardt
On being No. 1 and the game:
"We try not to look at rankings. We pay attention and know what's going on with other teams. With college lacrosse, anybody can win on any given day. Different types of teams, different types of players. We try not to focus on it too much, try to focus on ourselves. Stony Brook is a pretty good team, and they played some teams close, like UVA. We tried to focus on them, and we had eight days off, which is kind of a long time because of the Wednesday cancellation. I think we came out and we didn't play our best, but we got it done."
On Jeff Tundo:
"Tundo for them is a great player; we saw him on film. We're a systematic defense, so it wasn't my matchup or anyone else against him, but he's a great player. I think we needed to get out and not let him get space on the wings. They're very good at getting into that island spot and taking some of those low angle shots that they can put into the cage. We just had to lock them up so they couldn't do that."
