ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Junior Josh Asper placed sixth at 165 pounds for the second consecutive season at the NCAA Championships as Asper and the Maryland wrestling team completed competition Saturday morning at the Scottrade Center. The now two-time All-American entered session five with an opportunity to place third, but lost decisions to Appalachian State's Kyle Blevins and sixth-seeded Peter Yates of Virginia Tech.
Asper opened the morning against Blevins. The Mountaineer scored an early takedown in the first period to gain the advantage. Asper would tie the match with two escapes, but a third period takedown by Blevins sealed the match.
Against Yates, Asper surrendered a takedown and a 2-point near-fall early in the first period. With a five-point advantage, Yates was able to cautiously approach the remainder of the match. Yates went on to earn a 13-7 decision over Asper.
The Terps finished the tournament with 15.5 points in 31st place. Penn State won its second consecutive team title with 143 points.
