COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's tennis team put up a valiant effort in its season-opening dual match, but eventually fell to nationally-ranked Long Beach State, 6-1, on Saturday.

The Terps (0-1) were narrowly edged in doubles, losing 8-6 in each of the three matches, but fell behind early in singles and were unable to recover.

Deborah Armstrong's 6-3, 6-1 victory over Lisa Miller at No. 1 singles clinched the match for No. 51 Long Beach State (1-1).

Lexi Brand was a bright spot for the Terps. Playing in her first-career dual singles match, the freshman out-lasted Julie Luzar 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (3-7), 1-0 (10-8).

"It's not fun to lose but I think our girls acquitted themselves well," Maryland head coach Howard Joffe said. "For our first match, I'm very satisfied with the effort."

The Terps are off until next weekend when they play host to three non-conference teams. Pittsburgh visits College Park on Saturday (11 a.m.) before George Washington (9 a.m.) and Delaware (4 p.m.) come to town Sunday.
