BLACKSBURG, Va. - Maryland was led by a strong performance from sophomore Amber Melville as the team competed in the Doc Hale VT Elite Meet.

Melville took second place in the high jump as she cleared 6 feet. She became the first woman at Maryland to achieve this mark since Paula Girven did it in 1980. Melville's mark is tied for the the second highest jump in Maryland indoor history.

Maryland had two other jumpers who placed in the top five. Junior Amina Smith finished fourth (5-08.75) and sophomore Thea LaFond finished fifth (5-08.75). LaFond's jump is her personal best and is tied for the seventh best at Maryland.

LaFond also placed third in the triple jump with a score of 40-11.50.

Maryland had three participants place in the top eight in the shot put. Freshman Chioma Onyekwere led the Terps with a score of 49-09.00 to capture third. She was followed by Moriah Young (47-08.50) in fourth and Sonya Napariu (42-03.50), who finished seventh. Onyekwere's score is the fifth best in Terps history.

The Terps had numerous top finishers in the track events, led by the distance medley relay team. The team, comprised of Julie Sinkovitz, Ashley Brannock, Myah Hicks, and Maryam Fikri, ran a season best time of 11:45.76. This time is the fourth fastest at Maryland.

Maryland had strong performances all around in the 400 meter. Senior Arielle Statham ran a personal best time of 56.16 to finish fourth. Her time is the ninth fastest in Terps history. Junior Ayanna Fields (57.41) and sophomore Shade Pratt (57.47) captured seventh and eighth, respectively.

In the 800 meter, the Terps had three strong finishes. Sinkovitz led the way with a time of 2:09.21 to finish in third place. Myah Hicks captured seventh with a time of 2:10.75 and Maryam Fikri got 12th (2:13.47). Sinkovitz's time is second all time at Maryland, while Hicks' mark is fifth all time.

Junior Becky Yep placed fourth in the 5000 meter race with a time of 17:48.09. This time is the seventh fastest for Maryland.

The Terps have next weekend off to prepare for the ACC Championships, which begin February 21st in Blacksburg, Va.
