No. 6 Terps Lose Tough Match At No. 13 Virginia

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - No. 6 Maryland dropped an extremely hard-fought match at No. 13 Virginia Friday night 1-0. Maryland falls to 12-4 (4-2 ACC) while Virginia goes to 11-5 (3-3 ACC0 on the season. With the loss, Maryland earns the No. 2 seed in the ACC tournament and will play NC State in the first round on Nov. 14 at 5:30 p.m.

Virginia threatened in the 25th minute when Ryan Kelly shot a rocket that Terps' sophomore keeper Noah Palmer (Williamsburg, Va.) was able to grab with a diving save.

Maryland striker Erwin Diaz (Washington, D.C.) fed Abe Thompson (Fairfax Station, Va.) in the box, but the Terps were unable to convert from point blank range as Cavalier keeper David Comfort was there to make the save.

Maryland had another great chance with 6:52 remaining in the first half when Chris Lancos (Middletown, N.J.) sent the ball forward to Thompson. Thompson fired a shot that went just wide right and the teams headed to the locker room scoreless after the first 45 minutes.

Virginia got on the board first in 64th minute when Alecko Eskandarian unloaded from just outside the box and hit the upper right side of the net for the 1-0 UVa advantage what would eventually be the gamewinner.

Maryland fought to the end, however, with Thompson threatening again with 5:25 left to play, sending a strike just wide left.

Two more home games remain for the No. 6 Terps in the regular season, Bucknell (Nov. 6 at 7 p.m.) and Mount St. Mary's (Nov. 8 at 7 p.m.). Both games will be home games played at Ludwig Field. Maryland begins ACC tournament play on Nov. 14 in Cary, N.C. and will meet NC State at 5:30 p.m.
