Terps Wrestling Falls To Scarlet Knights

Jan. 29, 2003

Freshman John-Henry Zarzycki continued his dominating first collegiate season wrestling in the 141-pound weight class by posting his fourth consecutive dual meet win, a 5-1 victory over Rutger's Jon Rodriguez to give the Terps a 3-0 lead out of the gate.

Maryland was trying to duplicate last season's 20-16 defeat of Rutgers, Wednesday night in New Brunswick, N.J.

After starting hot, the Terps lost four straight bouts highlighted by a third period pin by Rutger's Amir Kahn over Jason Kiessling to give the Scarlet Knights a lead they would not relinquish.

After Maryland fell down 15-3 early, senior Jake Stork stepped on the mat and disposed of Rutger's Rudy Medini in just 1:08 to score his nation's best 22nd pin of the season. Stork's pin also extended his winning streak to 20 on the season.

After Stork's pin, Sal Aquia and Eric Fehnel lost consecutive matches by two points in the 197-pound and heavyweight divisions, respectively.

With the Terps down 21-9, Matt Pandullo earned the Terps final three points with a win over Shaun Sehar 5-3 in the 125-pound weight class.

The Scarlet Knights finished off the Terps 24-12 after Mike Lupa fell to Andrew Tilles in the match's final bout of the day.

The win was the fourth straight for the Scarlet Knights who moved to 7-3 on the season, while the Terps fell to 4-4.

Maryland will be in action next in Chapel Hill, N.C. for the second of four consecutive matches away from home. The match will take place Sat. Feb. 1st at 1:00 p.m., and will be the Terps second ACC match of the season.
