KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Maryland dropped both games in day two at the ESPN Citrus Classic at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex. The Terps fell 11-3 to Hofstra and 9-8 to Fairfield. Full stats and a complete release will be available later.
Sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser started in both games for the Terrapins (4-9). Against Hofstra, an NCAA Super Regionals team last year, the Terps fell behind two runs early as the Pride took a two-run lead in the bottom of the second. Freshman Juli Strange hit an RBI single in the top of the third to score junior Amanda McCann and get the Terps on the board.
The Pride took a 6-1 lead later off a high fly ball to shallow center to score three more. Strange hit a double to add two more Terps' runs, but it wasn't enough as the Terps fell 11-3 in six innings.
In game two, the Stags took an early 2-0 lead with a two-run home run in the top of the first. In the bottom of the inning, Maryland rallied to score two to tie it up Junior Mandy Gardner hit an RBI single to give Maryland a 3-2 lead in the first.
Fairfield tied it up off a Terrapin error in the third. They stayed tied until the Terps took a 4-3 lead to head into the top of the sixth. Hofstra took a 6-4 lead, until senior Melissa Mancuso hit her first career home run to tie it up at six.
The Pride rallied to take a 9-6 lead off of three Terrapins' errors. Freshman Lindsey Schmeiser made it a 9-8 game with her first career home run with one out, but the Terps fell a run short.
