TESTUDO
Dr. H.C. "Curly" Byrd, the former football coach who later became University President, recommended the Diamondback turtle as Maryland's mascot in1932 in response to the student newspaper's search for an "official" leader. The class of 1933 sponsored as its graduation gift the permanent, bronzed terrapin that watches over McKeldin Mall to this day. Identical bronzed Terrapins exist on the Byrd Stadium field and at the entrance to XFINITY Center.
