COLLGE PARK, Md. -- The Maryland women's lacrosse team earned its 22nd NCAA Tournament berth and will take on fifth-seeded North Carolina in the first round on Sunday, May 14, in Chapel Hill. The game time will be 1 p.m. The two teams played earlier this season with the Tar Heels edging the Terps, 11-9.

"We are excited to be back in the tournament," head coach Cindy Timchal said. "North Carolina is a good team that we are familiar with; they have several marquee players on offense and their defense is led by a great goalie in Kristen Hordy. It's tough going on the road, but it's a challenge that we are energized by."

The bid marks the 17th consecutive year Maryland has advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Maryland's nine NCAA championships are more than any other program.

The Terps enter the tournament with a record of 12-7. Maryland has seven players with at least 20 points this season, led by senior Delia Cox, who has career high marks in goals (56), assists (22), and points (78). The defense, which is allowing just under nine goals a game, is anchored by junior All-ACC defender Becky Clipp and sophomore goalie Allie Buote.

The winner of the Maryland-North Carolina game will advance to face Northwestern-Stanford in the quarterfinals.
