KISSIMMEE, Fla. - Maryland fell to Notre Dame, 5-3, at the ESPN Citrus Classic at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex Sunday.
Sophomore pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser started in the circle for the Terrapins. She held the Irish scoreless through the top of the first, then the Terps took the lead first. Freshman Sara Acosta bunted her over to third and senior Melissa Mancuso brought her in with a sacrifice fly.
Notre Dame tied it up in the top of the second. Laura Winter led off with a double of her own, then Amy Buntin brought her in with a single through the left side. The Irish took a 2-1 lead with a solo home run to right by Lauren Stuhr.
Maryland took back the lead at 3-2 with a two-run home run by freshman Nikki Maier got on with a double, then Schmeiser sent the home run over the wall two batters later.
Notre Dame took the lead for good with a three-run home run by Cassidy Whidden in the top of the sixth.
The Terrapins (4-10) will host Seton Hall in their home opener Tuesday in a 5 p.m. doubleheader at Robert E. Taylor Stadium. Admission is free and parking around the stadium will open at 4 p.m. Live stats will be available.
