Terps Play Host to Maryland Invitational Track

Jan. 17, 2008

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The University of Maryland will serve as host to its annual Maryland Invitational indoor track and field meet this Saturday, Jan. 19 at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md.

Field events will begin at 10 a.m. with the men's weight throw, with running events scheduled to begin at 11 a.m. with the women's distance medley relay. Competition is scheduled through the men's 4x400 relay at 6:05 p.m.

The Terrapins will be competing in their second meet of the indoor season and will be coming off a strong showing by both the men and women in last week's season-opener at Virginia Tech. A dozen Maryland student-athletes qualified for the ECAC/IC4A Indoor Championships based on performances last weekend.

That group was led by seniors Dominic Berger and Toni Aluko. Berger, Maryland's three-time All-America hurdler, put up the Terps' lone NCAA provisional-qualifying mark of the opening weekend, going 7.36 seconds in the 55-meter hurdle prelims and finishing second in that event. Aluko, the reigning ACC champion in the women's high jump outdoors, went 5-6.50 in Blacksburg to take the victory.

Senior thrower Jillian Anwah posted two ECAC-qualifying marks in the shot put and 20-pound weight throw, while Jeremy Samuels and Sean Lowe each hit solid marks in the men's 400 to finish third and fourth, respectively.

Also in the field of 35 collegiate teams scheduled to appear are area schools such as American, Bowie State, Catholic, Georgetown, Howard, Navy, Towson and Virginia.
