CLEARWATER, Fla. - Starting pitchers Maddie Martin and Kaitlyn Schmeiser combined for 14.0 innings with no earned runs and 18 strikeouts to lead Maryland to a 6-1 win over Temple and a 4-0 win over Valparaiso in USF's Under Armour Invitational Saturday.
Against the Terriers, the Terrapins (11-15) starting pitcher Kaitlyn Schmeiser threw a complete game with just three hits and one unearned run in her seven innings to go with 12 strikeouts.
Sophomore Shannon Bustillos got the Terrapins on the board in the bottom of the first with a double to score senior Sara Acosta, who had bunt singled, and freshman Juli Strange, who was hit by a pitch.
Maryland added three more runs in the bottom of the third. Acosta singled to right center, then pinch hitter Corey Schwartz bunted her over to second. Freshman Lindsey Schmeiser tripled to bring Acosta in. Bustillos was hit by a pitch for two runners on and senior Nikki Maier singled up the middle to score them both for a 5-0 lead.
The Terrapins got their sixth run in the bottom of the fifth. Bustillos drew a walk, then scored off a triple by Maier.
Temple (6-11) got on the board in the sixth. Ali Robinson got to third on an error by the Terps to start the inning, then Sarah Prezioso knocked her in on a groundout to first. Schmeiser struck out the side in the top of the seventh to close the door on the win.
In the game vs. Valparaiso (12-10), Maryland struck first with two runs in the top of the fourth. Lindsey Schmeiser led off with a single to the shortstop, then junior Candice Beards moved her to third with a double to right. Maier scored Schmeiser with a sacrifice fly. Beards advanced to third on the play and Bustillos brought her in with another sacrifice fly for a 2-0 lead.
Maryland tacked on a third run in the top of the sixth when senior Lexi Carroll hit an RBI base hit to score Schwartz, who doubled. Junior Amanda McCann reached on an error to start the top of the seventh, then scored off Beards' RBI single. The Crusaders loaded the bases off two hits and a walk, but Martin struck out the final batter to end the game.
Martin allowed five hits, no runs, two walks and picked up six strikeouts in her 7.0 innings.

After this weekend's games, the Terrapins will return home to open ACC play vs. Virginia (9-10, 1-2 ACC) next weekend. The Terps and the Cavaliers will play a doubleheader on March 23 at 1 p.m. and a single game at 1 p.m. on March 24. Admission is free.
