RALEIGH, N.C. - Maryland received eight solid innings from senior lefty Jimmy Reed, but NC State's Carlos Rodon gave up one run over 7-2/3 innings as the Wolfpack held on to defeat the Terps, 3-2, Friday night at Doak Field at Dail Park.

Both pitchers turned in superb outings. After giving up three runs in the first inning, only one of which was earned, Reed settled in to keep the Wolfpack offense off balance retiring eight batters in a row. Reed held NC State to three hits over the remaining seven innings while striking out four.

Despite battling some control issues early, Rodon held the Terps to five hits and struck out 11. Rodon fanned four consecutive batters at one point.

The decisive inning came in the bottom of the first. The Wolfpack scored on its first batter as Brett Austin hit his first home run of the season taking Reed's 0-1 offering over the left-field fence. Trea Turner singled through the left side and advanced to third on the next batter on a throwing error. A fielder's choice led to the second run and an error on Blake Schmit scored the third, both runs unearned.

The Terps threatened in each of the first three innings putting four runners in scoring position. But Rodon was able to work out unscathed each time. NC State's ace tallied five strikeouts through three.

Reed settled in after the first and retired eight batters in a row before the Pack put one on in the bottom of the fourth inning. The senior lefty didn't allow a runner past first in the next six innings, but was matched by Rodon.

The Wolfpack's southpaw allowed three Terrapin hits from the fourth until the eighth inning. Rodon struck out at least one batter in four of the five innings.

The Terps got to Rodon and the Wolfpack in the top of the eighth. After the first two Terrapin batters were retired to being the inning, Convissar drew a 3-2 walk and moved to second on a single through the left side by Tim Kiene to load of the bases prompting a move to the bullpen.

Ryan Wilkins entered the game and promptly hit Schmit with his first pitch to force home the Terps first run. But that is all the Terps could muster in that half of inning.

After Reed stranded runners at first and third in the bottom of the eighth, Maryland opened the top of ninth with two consecutive singles by Kevin Martir and Greg Olenski. Charlie White sacrificed to move the Terrapin runners to second and third.

LaMonte Wade brought the Terps within one at 3-2 with a RBI ground out to third to bring up Convissar. On a 1-1 pitch, NC State closer Grant Sasser induced a fly ball to left field to end the game.

The Terps and Wolfpack resume their series Saturday at 6:30 p.m. from Doak Field at Dail Park.
