Wrestlers Top George Mason, 37-8

FAIRFAX, Va. - The Maryland wrestling team (4-2, 0-1 ACC) recorded their fourth non-conference victory of the season Wednesday night, downing the Patriots of George Mason (2-4, 0-0 CAA), 37-8, at the John Linn Memorial Gymnasium. The Terrapins took eight of ten matches, including the last six wrestled, to earn the victory over last year's Colonial Athletic Association champions.

The Patriots won the first match with Adrian Austin of George Mason defeating freshman Adam James (Silver Spring, Md.) by a 15-2 major decision. The Terps came right back with two match victories to gain an early 9-4 lead. Freshman John Antonelli (Norristown, Pa.) captured his second dual meet win of the season with a 3-2 decision over Richard Appau at 157, while senior co-captain Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) earned his fifth fall of the year, pinning Chad Scheidegger in 2:52 at 165.

George Mason won its second match of the night with P.J. Ross taking the victory over sophomore Mark Reid (Medford, N.J.) by a 14-5 major decision to tighten the margin. After the Patriots forfeited at 184, Terrapin head coach John McHugh decided to move junior Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.) up a weight class to 197. The moved paid off as Stork recorded a 16-3 major decision victory over John Davis for his sixth straight dual match victory.

Sophomore Jeremy Duncan (Platte City, Mo.) earned his second fall of the season, pinning his opponent in 2:20 in the heavyweight class. The Terps put the match away with a Patriot forfeit at 125, claiming a 31-8 insurmountable lead.

Senior co-captain Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.) improved his record to 6-0 all-time against George Mason wrestlers with a 3-2 decision over Rob Becker at 141. Senior Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) earned his 85th career victory at Maryland with a 6-3 decision over Gary DeBrielle at 133.

Maryland will face Bucknell Sunday at 2 p.m. in Lewisburg. After Sunday's match, the Terps will head home for a four-match homestand beginning Wednesday Jan. 30th against Rutgers.
