PHILADELPHIA - The No. 33 nationally-ranked Maryland women's tennis team dropped a non-conference match Saturday afternoon to the No. 37 University of Pennsylvania, 5-2, at the Levy Tennis Pavilion.

The Terrapins dropped to 7-3 on the season with the loss, while Penn improved to 6-1.

Maryland won two of the three doubles matches to secure one point, but Penn captured five of the six singles matchups to clinch the victory.

Maryland's Marianne Baker and Eleanor Peters, the No. 53-ranked doubles duo in the nation, won at the No. 1 position, defeating Yulia Rivelis and Julia Koublitskaya, 8-4. The Terps also won at No. 3, with freshmen Elyse Steiner and Lisa Miller dropping Lenka Snajdrova and Amanda Avedissian, 8-4.

Michal Amir and Maggie MacKeever fell at No. 2 doubles with Penn's Michelle Mitchell and Ekaterina Kosminskaya triumphing, 8-7.

Steiner won at No. 3 singles, but it was all Penn in the other five singles matches. Steiner defeated Lenka Snajdrova in straight sets 6-0, 6-3.

But Kosminskaya upset Baker, the 98th-ranked singles player in the country, 6-3, 6-1 at the No. 1 position, and Koublitskaya upended Peters 6-1, 6-7, 6-2 at No. 2. Peters entered the match No. 66 nationally in singles.

Rivelis downed Amir 7-5, 6-1 at No. 3 singles, Mitchell defeated MacKeever 6-3, 6-2 at No. 5 and Lauren Sadaka downed Miller 6-2, 7-5 at No. 6.

Maryland continues its two-game road trip tomorrow at Princeton (4-2). The Tigers, winners of four straight matches, play host to the Terps at 11 a.m. from the Lenz Tennis Center.
