GREENSBORO, N.C. - The Maryland women's golf team combined for a 10-over 578 and is in second place after the opening day of the UNC-Greensboro Starmount Classic.
Juliet Vongphoumy led the way for the Terps by shooting a 2-under 140 (71-69) and is in second place behind East Carolina's F. Gustafsson Spang, who shot a 6-under 136. Maryland has three players in the top 10 after Christine Shimel shot 144 (72-72), good for fifth, and Heidi Baek shot 146 (73-73) to tie for eighth.
East Tennessee State leads the tournament after shooting a 2-over 570. The Terps were tied for the lead after 18 holes with a 287, but East Tennessee State shot a 283 while Maryland shot 291 on the day's final 18.
The Terps, who finished 5th at the Cardinal Classic two weeks ago, will look for their second straight top-5 finish when the final round tees off Tuesday at 9 a.m.
