COLLEGE PARK, Md. - One of the smallest Terps came up huge on Wednesday night as the Maryland wrestling team (6-2, 0-1 ACC) came from behind to down Rutgers (3-7), 20-17, at Ritchie Coliseum. Trailing 14-17 heading into the last match of the evening, 133-pound senior Joe Guzzio (Greensboro, N.C.) put the team on his shoulders, pinning Scarlet Knight wrestler Andrew Tilles to lift the Terrapins to the dramatic victory. The fall, Guzzio's seventh of the season, came with 1:06 remaining in the first period.
Maryland's new all-time winningest wrestler, Brandon York (Gaithersburg, Md.), added to his victory total Wednesday night, beating Ken Rodriquez by an impressive, 16-4, major decision to begin a see-saw battle between the Terps and Knights. For York, that is his team-high 29th win of the season and 131st of his career. Rutgers' Andrew Austin defeated freshman Adam James (Silver Spring, Md.) by a major decision, 17-7, at 149 pounds, to even the score at four a piece. The Terrapins rebounded, winning the next two bouts at 157 and 165 to take an 11-4 early lead. Freshman John Antonelli (Norristown, Pa.) picked up his fourth dual meet win of the year with a 10-5 decision over Chris Ressa and last week's ACC Wrestler of the Week, Josh Weidman (Hershey, Pa.) beat Bryon Lauer by an 8-0 major decision.
The Scarlet Knights took the next three bouts to take a two-point lead heading into the final three matches. Sophomore Mark Reid (Medford, N.J.) dropped his match to Andrew Roy, 8-2, at 174 pounds. At 184, 19th ranked Tom Tanis of Rutgers defeated junior Jake Stork (Mohrsville, Pa.), 11-7. The loss was Stork's first in a dual meet this season, ending his seven match win streak.
Maryland regained the lead after sophomore Jeremy Duncan (Platte City, Mo.) decisioned Frank Sabatino, 5-4, in the heavyweight class. Freshman Mike Lupa (Westbury, N.Y.) lost in his first dual meet appearance of the season to Andrew Uhrlass, giving Rutgers a three-point edge heading into the final match. Guzzio's pin sealed the three-point victory for the Terps, denying Rutgers head coach John Sacchi his 400th career victory.
The Terps return to the mats Saturday to face ACC foe North Carolina in a 1:30 p.m. match at Cole Field House.
