LINCOLN, Neb. - The University of Maryland wrestling team split a pair of duals in Nebraska Sunday, defeating South Dakota State, 29-9, before losing to host, fourth-ranked Nebraska, 26-13.

Maryland (4-7-1) had a relatively-easy time against South Dakota State, despite the match being tied at the midway point.

A forfeit and a Bradley Nielson decision put the Terps up 9-0 after two matches, but the Jackrabbits responded with three straight victories to knot the score at 9-9, including an upset at 197 pounds, when Tyler Sorenson edged No. 11 Hudson Taylor, 13-11.

However, the Terps took the final five matchups en route to the win.

A Brendan Byrne decision at 125 and a forfeit at 133 pounds quickly gave Maryland those nine points back. No. 14 Alex Krom then won an 18-9 major decision at 141 pounds, Steve Fehnel earned a decision at 149 pounds and Kyle John took a 15-1 major decision at 157 pounds to close out the match.

Unfortunately, the Terps fell behind big early against No. 4 Nebraska. The Cornhuskers went up 16-0 in the first four matches, highlighted by the 197-pound bout, where No. 2 Craig Brester outlasted Taylor, 7-4.

Gilmore stopped Nebraska's run at heavyweight, pulling of a 4-3 upset of No. 17 Tucker Lane. A forfeit at 125 pounds made the score 16-9 and the Terps were back in the match.

Nebraska took the 133-pound matchup, but Krom took a 9-1 major decision at 141 pounds to get the Terps within six, 19-13, with two matches remaining.

Unfortunately, the Cornhuskers earned a decision at 149 pounds and a major decision at 157 pounds to seal the victory.

"The match against South Dakota State was a good test. We did not plan on the match, but the guys responded well and wrestled tough," Maryland head coach Kerry McCoy said. "The Nebraska match was very similar to Friday. We wrestled well and made a couple of mistakes, but we fought hard and gave ourselves a chance to win. Pat Gilmore did a great job. That guy has beaten a lot of tough guys this season. Alex (Krom) had a great weekend, as well. He really proved he has what it takes to be one of the nation's best. I am not happy with losing, but I am happy that we competed well, are improving in all areas and really coming together as a team."
