CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- The University of Maryland softball team completed its first day of play at the Triangle Classic in Chapel Hill, N.C., defeating Drexel, 8-1, and falling to Miami (Ohio), 4-2. The Terps continue play today against Rhode Island and UNC-Wilmington.

Led by the powerful bat of junior infielder/pitcher Kelly Shipman, the Terps knocked out 11 hits, including a pair of home runs by Shipman and a home run by sophomore designated hitter Cortney Madea. Shipman went three-for-five at the plate against Drexel. Junior pitcher Tisha Killian pitched a brilliant game, registering eight strikeouts and allowing only two walks.

In the nightcap, Shipman posted nine strikeouts but it wasn't enough as Miami (Ohio) rallied late in the game to get the win. Shipman recorded her third home run of the early season and was two-for-three from the plate.

The tournament concludes tomorrow.
