Terps Defeat Richmond, 6-1

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Maryland women's tennis team, ranked No. 32 nationally, defeated Richmond 6-1 Saturday afternoon in a non-conference match at the Tennis Center at College Park. The Terps improved their record to 7-1, while Richmond fell to 0-5.

In her first match of the spring season, senior Brooke Rogers secured the victory for the Terrapins with her win over Richmond's Jelena Zivanovic (6-1, 6-1) at the No. 6 singles position.

Marianne Baker, Eleanor Peters, Lisa Miller and Elyse Steiner also racked up singles wins for the Terrapins.

Baker, who is ranked No. 75 nationally, defeated Pamela Duran at the No. 1 singles slot (6-7 [3], 6-2, 12-10). In the No. 2 singles position, Eleanor Peters beat Richmond's Robin Carter (6-1, 6-0), while Miller beat Xenia Schneider (6-1, 6-2) in the No. 5 slot. At the No. 3 position, Steiner won the first set against Beatrice Grasu, 6-3, before Grasu retired.

The Terps earned one point by winning two of the three doubles matches. Baker and Peters defeated Grasu and Carter (8-6), while Miller and Steiner beat Schneider and Zivanovic, 8-3. Freshman Maggie MacKeever and Rogers lost to Duran and Vosters, 8-6.

Maryland will play host to No. 14 Virginia Commonwealth at noon Sunday. The match will take place at the Tennis Center at College Park.
