Terps Indoor Track And Field To Face First Team Competition

COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The Terps will test their legs on unfamiliar territory for the first time this season as they travel to Newark, Del., this Friday to compete in the Delaware Invitational. Head coach Bill Goodman has called on the athletes to step up their level of competition, as each individual place will count for points in the team competition.

The 2003 Delaware Invitational

  • The meet will be held on Friday, Jan. 10, at the University of Delaware in Newark, Del.
  • The Delaware Invitational begins at 6:00 p.m. at the Delaware Field House.
  • Five teams will be competing in the meet, including Delaware, Delaware State, Navy (women only), Maryland and Rider.
  • Complete results of the meet will be available Saturday, Jan. 11, on the University of Maryland Athletics web site

    Recap of the Terrapin Invitational

  • The Terrapin Invitational was held at the Prince George's Sports and Learning Complex in Landover, Md., on Jan. 5, and served as the team's second meet of the season.
  • The women's team posted eight first-place finishes, including victories in the 200 meters, 400 meters, 800 meters, mile, 3000 meters, weight throw and the 4x400 and distance medley relays.
  • Athletes winning their events were Toni Jefferson (200, 60), Devenn Hamilton (400), Kim Smith (mile), Kelly Wallace (800), Katie Purcell (3,000) and Aranda Brown (weight throw).
  • On the men's side, three athletes set new personal records in their events: Mike Prada (8:40.80 in the 3,000 meters), Beau Fay (49.3 feet in the weight throw) and Harold Manning (6.87 in the 60 meters).
  • Athletes with top-five showings in their events were Prada (mile, 3,000), Beau Fay (shot put, weight throw), Manning (200, 60), Rob Frelow (400) and Doug Allen (3,000, mile).

    A Look Back at the 2002 Delaware Invitational

  • Eight individual victories for the women and six for the men helped propel both the women's and men's teams to meet wins at the 2002 Delaware Invitational.
  • Thema Napier and Frelow each recorded two victories at the competition: Napier in the 60 meter hurdles and 800 meters, and Frelow in the 200 and 400-meter dashes.
  • Other individual winners for the women were Dionne Hamilton (400), Devenn Hamilton (500) and Punnie Chittchang (long jump). Seniors claiming first-place showings were Amber Stanley (high jump), Tracy Ojeniyi (shot put) and Ruth Kura (weight throw).
  • For the men, Derrick Hill, John Collins and Adrian Nelson won their events, in the 500 meters, weight throw and high jump, respectively. Also placing first was Phillip Barrett in the 60-meter hurdles.
  • Kura, Brown, Nelson and Collins qualified for post-season competition in their events.
