CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - Jamie Howard and Fred Weaver combined to hold the University of Virginia to only one unearned run on five hits here Sunday as the Cavaliers fell to the University of Maryland 5-1 in Atlantic Coast Conference play. With the loss, UVa falls to 17-30 on the year and 7-13 in conference play. The Terrapins salvage the final game of the three-gam series and improve to 18-20-1 and 6-11.

Maryland got on the board first with two runs on two hits in the top of the third. Ray Gemmill led off the inning with a walk and then advanced to third when Eric Beer followed with a double to left-center. Matt Swope then grounded out to score Gemmill and Larry Long followed with an RBI single to plate Beer.

Virginia cut the lead in half with a run in the fourth on a hit and a Maryland error. Robbie Marvin reached on a error by Casey Trout with one out in the inning and then stole second. Jon Benick followed with a fly ball to right field, and a heads-up Marvin advanced to third when the Terrapins never called for time. That was key, as the next batter, Julian Gonzalez, reached on an infield hit that allowed Marvin to score from third.

The Terrapins plated another two runs in the sixth on two hits and a Virginia error. Craig Munroe reached to lead off the inning when Hunter Wyant lost an infield pop up in the sun. After a single to left by Jason Mohap, Brian Barton doubled down the rightfield line to score both runners and push the Terp lead to 4-1. Maryland added another run in the seventh on an RBI single by Trout.

Meanwhile, Howard (4-2) kept the Cavaliers at bay all day. The Southpaw allowed four hits and one unearned run through seven innings of work with only one walk. He threw just 86 pitches on the day before giving way to Weaver in the eighth.

Brandon Creswell (5-6) took the loss for the Cavaliers, allowing five runs, four earned, on seven hits with four walks over six innings of work.

Marvin, Gonzalez, Jon Benick, Tim LaVigne and Wyant had the only hits for the Cavaliers, who won the first two games of the series 9-5 and 15-3. Long, Trout and Barton each had two hits on the afternoon for the College Park nine, while the latest had two RBI.
