PALM SPRINGS, Calif. - The Maryland softball team held No. 8 California scoreless through six innings and No. 13 UCLA scoreless for four innings in two close losses Saturday.

The Terrapins had a bases-loaded rally in the seventh vs. UCLA, but the Terps were edged by the Bruins, 4-3, in the Mary Nutter Collegiate Classic.

Sophomore Kaitlyn Schmeiser pitched 5.2 innings and allowed seven hits, one walk and notched two strikeouts in a commanding performance.

UCLA (10-1) got on the board with one run in the bottom of the second. Devon Lindvall sent a base hit to the middle to score the only run for the first four innings.

Schmeiser held the Bruins to one hit in the third, fourth and fifth innings.

In the bottom of the sixth, UCLA added three more runs. Ally Carda sent a solo homer over the centerfield wall. Two batters later, Mysha Sataraka hit a two-run home run to left center. Freshman Maddie Martin came on to pitch and struck out the final Bruin batter to end the inning.

The Terrapin offense got going in the top of the seventh. Junior Mandy Gardner led off with a single to center. With the bases loaded, in a Terrapins run scored with two outs on a passed ball. With the bases still loaded, senior Sara Acosta singled up the middle to score one more and make it a two-run game. Junior Shannon Bustillos flied out to right center to end the game.

In the nightcap vs. California (9-2), the Terrapins gave up three runs in the top of the first and none the rest of the way. Lindsey Ziegenhirt hit a three-run homer right for the Bears' only three runs of the day.

Martin pitched two innings and gave up just one hit - the three-run homer. She also allowed just one walk and two strikeouts.

Freshman Kaitlyn Schmeiser came on in the top of the fifth and allowed four hits and no runs in her 2.2 innings in the circle.

Maryland picked up its two runs in the bottom of the fifth when Nikki Maier homered to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

The Terps had a runner on after a walk in the bottom of the seventh, but were unable to take the lead.

Next, the Terrapins will compete in the ESPN Sun Classic next weekend at Disney's Wide World of Sports Complex.
