COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Head coach Julie Wright unveiled her team’s 54-game spring 2018 schedule on Tuesday. The slate includes 18 home games, in addition to nine matchups against teams that advanced to the 2017 NCAA Softball Tournament.
“We are excited with the competitive balance of our schedule as well as the great ballparks we will get to play in this season,” said Wright. “This type of preseason will help to prepare us for the challenge of the Big Ten.”
The Terps will kick off their 2017 campaign February 9-11 at the UCLA Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. Six Maryland players will return to their home state for the five-game tournament, which features matchups against Cal Poly, UC Riverside, Middle Tennessee State and host UCLA.
Maryland will the take its first of two trips to SEC country February 16-18 at the Auburn Invitational, with games scheduled against Delaware, St. Francis (PA) and Auburn. The following weekend the Terps will return to the Florida Tournament for the second consecutive season. Last year, Maryland made national headlines after knocking off the No. 1 Gators at the tournament and will twice match up with 2018 College World Series participant Florida in addition to Illinois State, Georgia Southern and Iowa State.
UMD will next be in action at the Louisville Invitational March 2-4, with matchups against IUPUI, Eastern Illinois, Miami (OH) and host Louisville.
The Terrapins will the play hosts for the annual Maryland Invitational at Maryland Stadium March 8-11. Maryland will welcome Utah, Miami (OH), Jacksonville and Yale for the three-day tournament.
March 17-19 Maryland will travel to The Aloha State to play five games at the Hawaii Tournament in the Honolulu, Hawaii. The trip will be a special one for Kahului, Hawaii native Skylynne Ellazar, who will get the opportunity to play in her home state for the first time in her collegiate career.
The Terps will then strap in for Big Ten play on their return to the contiguous 48, starting the first of eight conference series against Penn State in State College, Pa. March 23-25. Maryland will then host its first conference opponent of the year March 30-April 1 when the Terps welcome Iowa for a three-game series.
Maryland will be back on the road April 6-8 for a three-game stint against Illinois in Champaign, Ill., before returning home for a five-game home stand against Indiana (April 13-15) and April 17 doubleheader against Rutgers.
The Terrapins will wrap up their road slate with consecutive weekends at Michigan (April 20-22) and Ohio State (April 27-29). Maryland will conclude its regular season May 4-6 against Michigan State at home for senior weekend, when Maryland will honor its three members of the class of 2018 in Skylynne Ellazar, Destiney Henderson and Jacqui Pascual.
Should they the advance, the Terps will travel to Madison, Wis. for the 2018 Big Ten Softball Championship May 10-12.
