COLLEGE PARK, Md. -- Each week during the 2017-18 season a Maryland student-athlete, who has shown excellence on and off the playing field, will be selected as the Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week. This week’s Solomon Eye Associates Terp of the Week is junior Melissa Wilken of the field hockey team.
Junior forward Melissa Wilken led No. 12 Maryland with four goals in two dominating road wins over top 25 teams this week. At No. 3 Virginia Tuesday, Wilken capitalized on her only shot of the game when she deflected in a ball from the right side. Maryland dominated 68 of 70 minutes vs. the Cavaliers.
At No. 21 Rutgers Sunday, Wilken picked up her first career hat trick. She opened the scoring in the seventh minute when she collected a loose ball rebound and tapped it in. Eighteen minutes later, she scored again to make it a 2-0 lead for Maryland when she capitalized on a 2-on-1 on Rutgers' keeper. She added her third goal 12 minutes into the second half.
Maryland has won six straight games, including four straight over ranked teams.
