IOWA CITY, Iowa – The sixth-ranked Maryland field hockey team (7-2, 2-0 B1G) scored twice late to win at No. 15 Iowa (6-3, 0-2) Friday. Sophomore Linnea Gonzales scored twice in the final 10 minutes to lift the Terrapins to their sixth straight victory.

The Hawkeyes got on the board first when All-Big Ten player Natalie Cafone scored 10 minutes in.

Just about 13 minutes later, freshman Sophie Pelzer tipped in a pass from graduate student Grace Balsdon to knot the game at one. The teams would stay tied at halftime.

Maryland wasted no time grabbing the lead, as Balsdon scored off a penalty corner just a minute and 45 seconds into the second half. Redshirt seniors Welma Luus and Emma Rissinger assisted on the play.

The Hawkeyes’ Cafone tied the game once again when she deflected in a shot with 21:12 to play.

Gonzales scored her first goal with 7:51 to play when she knocked in a shot from the left side. Four minutes later, she scored again, this time, from the middle of the circle.

“Linnea really came to the table when most needed,” head coach Missy Meharg. “She can do this and we’ve been working hard to have her in this position more. We started a little slow. Iowa came ready to play. Once we figured it out, we played very well.”

Next, the Terrapins will play at No. 11 Northwestern (6-2, 1-0) Sunday at 1 p.m. ET.
